Gartogg was one of Jabba the Hutt's nine Gamorrean guards and served as a palace sentry. He was unintelligent even for a Gamorrean and had a knack for coming across murdered corpses.

Landing the job

Gartogg was one of twelve Gamorreans who came to Tattooine at the request of Jabba. As was their custom, the Gamorreans engaged their employer in personal combat before they agreed to work for them. Jabba boasted he'd take them all on at once, but only if they were blindfolded, as was 'Hutt tradition' in such dominance fights. Of course, once the pigs were unable to see, Jabba had dozens of his thugs beat the Gamorreans mercilessly. The nine who survived were awed at the fighting proficiency of the Hutt.

Murder mysteries

Phlegmin was the kitchen boy who assisted Jabba the Hutt's chef Porcellus, but he was killed by Dannik Jerriko. Gartogg took it upon himself to investigate Phlegmin's murder and continued to carry his rotten corpse everywhere he went.

He desperately wanted to ride on the Khetanna, and Ortugg and Rogua (two other Gamorreans) said they'd let him if he solved the murder. After finding the corpse of Lady Valarian's B'omarr Monk, he began to carry it around as well. He finally concluded that Dannik Jerriko (the 'snot vampire' as Gartogg referred to him) had killed Phlegmin. Although this was true, Ortugg didn't let him go on the sail barge.

This turned out to be a stroke of luck, and after the sail barge exploded, Gartogg left Tatooine and began working for a smuggling ring, still carrying the mummified corpses of Phlegmin and the B'omarr monk everywhere he went.
